BVCA Recognized Recent Police Retirements

While planning the annual Summer Cocktail Party for Bay Village Civic Association members, their Board anticipated the usual attendance. What had always been a casual event at the Bull Dog Grille turned into something more, due to the unanticipated retirements of Amityville’s two top police officers.

With the announcements of the retirement of APD Chief Don Dobby, followed by the retirement of Lieutenant Gerry Gralton, an invitation was extended to them to attend. Certificates of Recognition were to be presented by BVCA president, Joan Donnison. As word spread to various political officials, more accolades came in.

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jeanne-Pierre, represented by Tyler Parks, awarded them a proclamation for their years of service. This was followed by proclamations from Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tony Martinez.

There was a genuine feeling of gratitude and respect for the officers’ many years of service to the Village of Amityville. Several heart felt references were made regarding their leadership during Superstorm Sandy. Supervisor Schaffer was particularly thankful for that.

N.Y. State Senator Michael Venditto also congratulated the officers on their retirements, while wishing the BVCA members a happy, safe summer.

Trustees Jessica Bernius, Kevin Smith and Dennis Siry were also present. Trustee Smith offered his congratulations and appreciation as a former Fire Department Chief for their collaboration with the department and their many years of service to the Village.

Steve Bellone Guest Speaker at April BVCA Meeting

SBellone at BVCA Mtg. April 2015

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was the guest speaker at the April 21 Membership Meeting of the Bay Village Civic Association.  The speaking engagement had been arranged about two months prior at the request of Mr. Bellone’s office.  The Suffolk County Executive wanted to reach out to civic associations to further explain his State of the County speech, while answering specific questions.

In his speech, Bellone highlighted three of his goals for the County:

1.      Government Reform

2.     Water Quality

3.     Economic Development

During the Q & A session, topics included the LIRR, “Connect L.I.” initiative, public safety, funding for downtown development, as well as a possible change in status for Republic Airport as proposed by Gov. Cuomo.

The BVCA was assured that the Suffolk County Executive supported keeping Republic Airport a general aviation airport.  That was applauded by the entire audience.

An Amityville cap and “Friendly Bay Villager” sweatshirt were presented to Mr. Bellone as an expression of the BVCA’s gratitude.

8th Annual BVCA Brunch/Raffle

8th Annual BVCA Brunch.Raffle Cake

The community showed up in style to honor Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. It

was our honor to recognize him for his efforts to benefit the Village.

Unqua can only accommodate a limited number of people at assigned seats. We filled the

Clubhouse….not only with people, but also gift baskets and gift cards to raffle. Barbara Strick and

Doris Reynolds did a wonderful job with their committee in organizing this event.

Thanks are offered to the following BVCA members: Edria Parks, Carolina Anderson, Martha

Peterson, Diane Apgar, Julie MacLean, Joanne Fisk, Cathy Reilly, Bonnie Boldizar, and Annie Bilello.

Special thanks to our favorite musician, Margaret Brooks, who once again serenaded us on the piano.

It was so nice to have representatives from most of the Village organizations, BVCA members, and

many politicians present to join us on this special occasion. We are looking forward to another

wonderful event next year.

 Amityville Senior Center Receives Donation

Members of the Board of the Bay Village Civic Association recently presented a $500 donation to the Amityville Senior Center.  Its director, Pat O’Neill, gratefully accepted it while members of the Center looked on.

BVCA Vice President Diane Apgar discussed the needs of the Center with Ms. O’Neill.  She learned that many of the chairs were straight backed and difficult for some to use.  Arm chairs were preferable.  The donation will be used to purchase more of these chairs.

The Amityville Senior Center is located in the Park North Administration Building.  Access is provided from the parking lot at the rear of the building.

The BVCA Board has made significant donations to the community over the years, including scholarships to AMHS students, gift cards to Sandy victims, community gardens, etc.  The BVCA was pleased to continue to assist Village residents of all ages.

The Bay Village Civic Association represents the residents of the Village of Amityville.  More information may be obtained at www.bayvillagecivic.org or viewing their page on Facebook.
