Wood’s Pond Preserve Clean Up

Wood’s Pond Preserve, a small parcel of grassy land just east of Suffolk County National Bank. After noticing much debris at this spot on Merrick Rd, the Honor Society students reached out to us for our support of Global Youth Service Day.

Permission was been granted by the Village and the Town of Babylon.  The pond was not be disturbed.  The team collected a dozen bags of debris and some fallen branches

We were so fortunate; just at the time that the clean-up was scheduled, the rain stopped. The sun even broke out as we were finishing.  41 Amityville M.H.S. National Honor Society students showed up!  We also had their advisor, and 10 BVCA members join in the event.

Special thanks to them:

Kevin Smith was on hand to wish us well. He was joined by Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory, as well as NY State Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. A group photo was taken for Global Youth Service Day.
Special thanks to Florence Findley from the Town of Babylon Community Development Program for her support, too.

Later that same day, the group moved on to the High School. Beds were cleaned and pruned, and new plants were planted at the driveway entrance signs.

Exhausted but gratified, we all retreated back to the school for pizza and refreshments. Dr. DeRose and her dog greeted us outside for another photo. School Superintendent, Dr. John Williams was also there. (He had an earlier commitment at the Rotary “Stuff a Bus” event.

We know many people had us in their thoughts. So many things are scheduled for the weekends! Thank you for whatever support you offered.

Speaking of support, Bellissimo’s donated pizza, Home Depot and Stop & Shop also made a donation to the project. Suffolk County National Bank allowed us to use their parking lot. Thank you, thank you!!
