Wounded Warriors Soldier Ride July 20, 2012

Once again, the Wounded Warriors Soldier Ride came through the Village of Amityville to an exuberant, supportive reception.  This annual event starts at Babylon Town Hall on Sunrise Highway.  After welcoming speeches by politicians, wounded veterans start their long ride terminating at Overlook Beach.  They are joined by many members of the community on this arduous adventure.

Among the riders was one of our members, Doug MacLean.  Doug’s avocation is photography.  Along the route, he took some wonderful pictures.  Some are shown here.

Note the sky as they entered the Village of Amityville.  Although it was dark and ominous, the worst of the weather seemed to break to allow the ride to proceed.  The Fire Department displayed a large American flag over Broadway as many of us waved flags and welcomed the riders.

There were many familiar faces among the riders.  Deputy Mayor and BVCA member Peter Casserly rode once again in support.  In addition, Suffolk County Executive and former Town of Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone joined The Ride.

Perhaps the most consistent and fervent supporter and rider was Don McVeety.  A BVCA member and retired member of the Suffolk County Police Department, Don participates in many of the Rides including the one in New York City that precedes this every year.

This is always an amazing community event.  We are honored to be a part of it.  Acknowledging the sacrifices and courage exhibited by the veterans is the least we can do.  Their tenacity in the face of obstacles continues to amaze us! SR_2012_2
