Ketcham Preserve Cleanup

Ketcham Preserve Cleanup

Press Release Productive May 20 Preserve Clean Up A group of forty students from Amityville Memorial H.S. volunteered to assist the Bay Village Civic Association clean up the Woods Preserve on Saturday, May 20. This hidden gem, on the north side of Merrick Rd. is a well- deserved recipient of their efforts. Although the Village DPW attends to it when needed, there is always more that can be cleared. Efforts are made to be careful and not disturb too much of the natural beauty and animal habitat. Through the cooperation of Jodi Wilsher, advisor to the National Honor Society, as well as members of the BVCA, the students achieved an improvement for the community’s benefit. Also in attendance was Lasheca Lewis, on behalf of NYS Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean Pierre. Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith was present with good wishes and congratulations. Following the Preserve Clean-up, all the volunteers proceeded to the H.S. to prune beds and add new plants, as needed. Red was a prominent color in recognition of the school colors. You may have noticed the red and white geraniums, visible from the street, encompassing the electronic sign. Following the completion of their efforts, pizza and refreshments were served in the school lunchroom. The delicious pizza was supplied courtesy of the BVCA and Raimo’s. All agreed it was delicious! Look around the next time you are at the H.S. Everyone hopes you appreciate the landscape improvements.

Camp Sunshine is pleased to announce the 2017 Long Island Polar Dip . We believe that together we can send many more children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to our one-of-a-kind retreat in Casco, Maine.

With the strength of an event such as the 2017 Long Island Polar Dip and the resources of Camp Sunshine, it is our goal to raise in excess of $20,000.00. That is enough to send 8 families to Camp Sunshine.

All participants who raise at least $100 will receive a highly coveted “I DID IT” event t-shirt.

Too scared or too smart to take the plunge? There’s the option to participate in the “Chicken Dip” – where you’ll only need to dip your toes in!

Several members of the Bay Village Civic Association are actively involved with Canine Companions. They train companion dogs until they are ready to “graduate” and live with someone who would benefit from their skills. One BVCA member has enjoyed a better quality of life with her latest dog for twelve years. Special thanks are extended to Ann Barile, Linda Hotchkiss and Tea, Townsend Thorn and Marco, as well as Lore Waegerle and Zellmann for providing such a wonderful presentation at a November membership meeting. On a cold and blustery night, those in attendance were amazed and inspired by the compassion and skills of the trainers, recipients and their dogs. Consequently, the Board of the civic association decided to offer financial support to the organization. At the Bay Village Civic Association Holiday Party, recently held at Vittorio’s, a raffle was held. The $350 proceeds from the large wine basket raffle was given to Canine Companions. Ann Barile and Tea stopped in to offer their gratitude. The winner also has a family member connected to CCI. She donated the basket to her for a future fundraiser for Canine Companions. It became the “gift that keeps on giving”! For more information about the Bay Village Civic Association, go to www.bayvillagecivic.org or follow them on Facebook. Canine Companions can be researched at info@cci.org.

NYS Senator Michael Venditto – Guest Speaker at October Membership Meeting

At the October 17 BVCA Membership Meeting, our featured guest speaker was N.Y. State Senator Michael Venditto. He spoke with us about things he supported in Albany, including tax rebates, grants for the Village and other measures that benefited Amityville. There was also a discussion about the need for an elevator at our L.I.R.R. station. The senator assured us that he is contact with the railroad and knows their objection (insufficient ridership). However, he will continue to work with us towards that goal. His concerns and efforts are truly appreciated.

Rotary Applefest 2016

Rotary held another successful Applefest on Saturday, October 1. Fortunately, there was no rain although it was cool and cloudy. Quite a few interesting vendors, food trucks, and a Showmobile were featured besides the apples and baked goods. Many visitors stopped by the Bay Village Civic Association booth to get more Village information. While there, they also purchased hoodies or sweatshirts….perfect for the weather. Several elected officials came by, too, including Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and NYS Senator Michael Venditto.

Sen. Venditto will be the featured speaker at our next Membership Meeting on October 17. Seating is limited and only members will be accommodated.

Village Road Paving Project

All Village roads that have been milled are now paved.  Crews are now in the process of replacing pavement markings, crosswalks and stop bars.

Funds are set aside for South Ketcham Avenue while National Grid finishes their gas main replacement work and Louden Avenue while storm drains are replaced.   The schedule for Village parking lot resurfacing will be posted as soon as it is available.

Riverside has been delayed due to an unanticipated project that is occurring – replacing soil lost on the island in the Amityville River.  All scheduling is weather dependent. Please visit back or check amityville.com and facebook.com/VillageofAmityville for up to date information.

South Ketcham was included in the original repaving plan for the bond. National Grid is working to replace the entire gas main on South Ketcham. After that, the road will be milled and paved. School buses are also having issues. There will be continued discussions between the Village and District to facilitate bus transportation. Check www.amityville.com or call Village Hall at 264-6000.

Follow road crew directions, drive carefully and safely. Joan

BVCA Awards 4 Scholarships to AMHS Seniors

On Thursday, June 2, Amityville Memorial High School held a Senior Awards Ceremony. Many students were recognized with a variety of scholarships and awards. It was an exciting moment for all to witness.

The Bay Village Civic Association was pleased to once again grant scholarships to students with outstanding records of community service as well as academic achievement. However, this year, the choice was particularly difficult for a very good reason. There were many applicants who were well qualified.

The recipients were Andrew Abate, Kenneth Dinnoo, Vanessa Ottey and Jaime Ruiz-Marcelo. Congratulations are extended to all winners, and their families. Their achievements and values bode well for their future, and that of our community.

Pictured here are the BVCA scholarship winners, as named above. Most are with BVCA President, Joan Donnison, at the Awards Ceremony. Good luck to all.
